Craig is a small, quiet place in Butte County, California. It's known as an unincorporated community. This means it's a group of homes and businesses that isn't officially a city or town. Instead, it's managed by the county government.

Before 1911, Craig was called Marston. Both names, Craig and Marston, were chosen to honor important officials from the Western Pacific Railroad.

Where is Craig Located?

Craig is found in the northern part of California. It's about 2 miles (or 3.2 kilometers) west-northwest of another small place called Honcut.

Elevation and Surroundings

This community sits at an elevation of 95 feet (which is about 29 meters) above sea level. Being near the Western Pacific Railroad, it has historical ties to the railway system that helped develop the area.

A Bit of History

Craig's history is closely linked to the railroad. Many small communities like Craig grew up around train lines. The railroad was vital for moving goods and people across the country.

How Places Get Their Names

It was common for new settlements to be named after people who were important to their development. In Craig's case, naming it after railroad officials showed their influence. This also happened when it was called Marston.
