Craig Phillip Robinson (born October 25, 1971) is a talented American actor, comedian, and musician. He is well-known for his funny roles and his musical performances. He has received several awards and nominations for his work in movies and TV shows.

Many people know Craig Robinson from his role as Darryl Philbin on the popular TV show The Office, which he starred in from 2005 to 2013. He also played Ray Heyworth on Mr. Robot and the funny character Doug "the Pontiac Bandit" Judy on Brooklyn Nine-Nine. You might also recognize his voice from animated movies like Shrek Forever After and The Bad Guys.

Craig Robinson has been in many other films and TV shows, showing his range as an actor. He even hosted the dancing show The Masked Dancer. Since 2022, he has been starring in and helping to produce the TV series Killing It.

Early life

Craig Robinson was born in Chicago, Illinois, on October 25, 1971. His mom was a music teacher, and his dad was a lawyer. He grew up on the South Side of Chicago.

He went to Whitney M. Young Magnet High School. Later, he earned his college degree from Illinois State University in 1994. He also got a Master of Education degree from Saint Xavier University. Before becoming a famous actor, he was a music teacher at elementary and high schools in Chicago and East Chicago, Indiana.

Career

Acting and comedy

Craig Robinson started his career by doing stand-up comedy. He also took classes in improv and acting at The Second City in Chicago while he was still in college. He performed at open-mic nights and won comedy competitions. Soon, he started appearing on late-night TV shows like Jimmy Kimmel Live.

In 2004, he got small roles in popular TV shows like Friends and Arrested Development. These led to bigger parts in movies such as Knocked Up and Pineapple Express.

His big break came in 2005 when he joined the cast of The Office as Darryl Philbin. He became a main character in the show's fourth season and stayed until it ended in 2013.

Craig Robinson has appeared in many other TV shows, including Brooklyn Nine-Nine and Reno 911!. He also voiced the character Cookie in Shrek Forever After in 2010. He played Reg Mackworthy on the HBO series Eastbound & Down.

He has lent his voice to several animated films. These include Escape from Planet Earth (2013), Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters (2013), Henchmen (2018), and Dolittle (2020). He also appeared in the Korean film D-War in 2007.

In 2014, Craig Robinson played saxophonist Maceo Parker in the movie Get On Up, which was about the life of James Brown. He also received great reviews for his role in the drama Morris from America (2016). For this role, he was nominated for an Independent Spirit Award. He also played Ray Hayworth in the second season of the TV series Mr. Robot.

In 2019, he became a spokesperson for a meat company called Dietz & Watson. He appeared in several commercials for them.

In 2020, Craig Robinson was a guest judge on The Masked Singer. He even performed a song as a "Mystery Piano Man." He later became the host of The Masked Dancer, which has a similar format. In 2021, he was featured in commercials for Pizza Hut and Gain detergent.

His latest TV series, Killing It, started in April 2022 on Peacock. He also voiced Mr. Shark in the 2022 animated movie The Bad Guys. That same year, he hosted a show called Harlem Globetrotters: Play It Forward, which even received an Emmy nomination.

For some years, Craig Robinson had a comedy act with comedian Jerry Minor. They performed as a musical duo called L. Witherspoon & Chucky. Craig Robinson played Chucky, the keyboard player and back-up singer. They performed their act on TV shows like Real Time with Bill Maher and Jimmy Kimmel Live!.

He often performs with his own band, called The Nasty Delicious. His brother, Chris Rob, plays keyboards and is the musical director. The band has other talented musicians playing bass, drums, guitar, saxophones, trumpet, and percussion.

His band was even featured in an episode of The Office. Craig Robinson has also performed music in character in several episodes of The Office. He was featured on the Hot Tub Time Machine movie soundtrack, singing "Jessie's Girl" and "Let's Get It Started". He also produced two songs for the film Miss March.

He performed with his band in the 2018 stand-up comedy special Seth Rogen's Hilarity for Charity.
