The Craigieburn Range is a cool mountain range in New Zealand. You can find it in the South Island, which is one of New Zealand's two main islands. It's part of a bigger mountain chain called the Southern Alps.

This range sits on the south side of the Waimakariri River. It's also south of a famous mountain pass called Arthur's Pass. You can easily reach it from State Highway 73. The nearby area called Craigieburn is right next to the Craigieburn Forest Park.

Tall Peaks of Craigieburn

The Craigieburn Range has many tall mountains. Here are some of the main peaks, listed from north to south:

  • Baldy Hill, which is 1,834 meters (6,017 feet) high.
  • Hamilton Peak, standing at 1,922 meters (6,306 feet).
  • Nervous Knob, reaching 1,820 meters (5,971 feet).
  • Mount Wall, at 1,874 meters (6,148 feet).
  • Mount Cockayne, also 1,874 meters (6,148 feet) tall.
  • Mount Cheeseman, a big one at 2,031 meters (6,663 feet).
  • Mount Olympus, even taller at 2,094 meters (6,870 feet).
  • Mount Izard, 2,019 meters (6,624 feet) high. It was named after William Izard.
  • Mount Cloudesley, one of the highest at 2,107 meters (6,913 feet).
  • Mount Enys, the tallest peak in the range at 2,194 meters (7,198 feet).
  • Carn Brea, 2,090 meters (6,857 feet) tall.
  • Willis Peak, 1,962 meters (6,437 feet) high. It was named after Paul Hedley Willis.
  • Blue Hill, standing at 1,946 meters (6,385 feet).

Fun Ski Areas

The Craigieburn Range is a popular spot for skiing and snowboarding! There are several ski fields here:

  • The Craigieburn Valley Ski Area is located east of Hamilton Peak.
  • The Broken River Ski Area is found east of Nervous Knob. It's also north of Mount Wall.
  • A third ski field, Mount Cheeseman, is east of Mount Cockayne. It's named after the mountain it sits near.
  • Porters ski area is at the very south end of the range.

All four of these ski fields are easy to get to from State Highway 73. There's also a fifth ski field called Mount Olympus Ski Area. You can reach this one by driving through a place called Windwhistle.
