Craigieburn is a special place in the northwest part of Canterbury. This region is located in New Zealand's South Island. Craigieburn is not just one spot. It's also the name for a mountain range, a ski area, and a forest park.
The Craigieburn Range of mountains sits on the south side of the Waimakariri River. This is south of Arthur's Pass. The Craigieburn Valley Ski Area is found on the slopes of these mountains. You can also find the Craigieburn Forest Park here. The ski slopes are only about an hour and a half drive from Christchurch, New Zealand.
A small body of water called Lake Hawdon is located right next to Craigieburn.
Cool Creatures of Craigieburn
During the warmer summer months, you can find five different kinds of grasshoppers in the Craigieburn Range.
- One type is called Sigaus villosus. You can spot these grasshoppers along the mountain ridges.
- Another type, Brachaspis nivalis, lives on the rocky slopes known as scree.
- Sigaus australis and Paprides nitidus both live in the alpine tussocklands. Tussocklands are areas with clumps of grass.
- Finally, Phaulacridium marginale can be found in the tussocklands below 1100 meters.

The Craigieburn area, which includes places like Arthur's Pass and Castle Hill Village, is quite large. It covers about 3407.52 square kilometers.
As of 2023, about 210 people live in this area. This means there are about 0.06 people per square kilometer.
In 2018, the population of Craigieburn itself was 159 people. This was a decrease from previous years. There were 81 households, with more males (93) than females (66).
