Craigmillar Park Church is a church in Edinburgh, Scotland. It is part of the Church of Scotland. The church building was built in 1879. A hall next to the church was added later in 1899. This church serves the Newington area of Edinburgh.
About the Church Building
The church building does not have a tall tower or a spire. However, it is located on a very busy main road. This road goes from Princes Street through Newington towards Liberton. The church is right next to the Royal Blind School. The church's minister also works as a Chaplain for the school. In the church garden, there is a special memorial. It remembers people from the area who died in the First World War.
A Look at History
The church was first called Mayfield Parish Church. Later, another church, Mayfield Free Church, joined the Church of Scotland. To tell them apart, "North" and "South" were added to their names.
Today's Craigmillar Park Church is the result of two churches joining together. The former Craigmillar Park and Mayfield South churches united in 1966. They now use the Mayfield South building for their services. This building then took the name of the old Craigmillar Park Church. The original Craigmillar Park Church building opened in 1899. It later became part of St. Margaret's School in 1976. After the school closed, it became the Iqra Academy, which is a mosque. As of July 2010, Craigmillar Park Church had 266 members.
On June 11, 2019, Rev. Alex McAspurren became the minister. He leads both Craigmillar Park Church and Reid Memorial Church. These two churches were linked together in 2018.
The Church Organ
Craigmillar Park Church has a wonderful organ and a talented organist. The organ is a large pipe organ with three keyboards. It was first built in 1892 and has been kept in great condition. Many people think it is one of the best church organs in Edinburgh. The organist is a skilled musician. Their music is a very important part of the church services. The church uses the "Church Hymnary 4th edition" for its songs. Sometimes, they also use other hymns and songs.
