This community has an interesting name! It was given its name to honor a Cherokee chief. The Cherokee people are a Native American tribe with a rich history in the southeastern United States, including Georgia.
A long time ago, in 1880, a post office was opened in Crane Eater. This was important because it helped people send and receive letters and packages. The post office stayed open for many years. However, it was closed down in 1906. Even without its own post office, the community of Crane Eater continues to be a part of Gordon County's history.
