The Crawford-Tilden Apartments are a historic apartment building. They are located in Cleveland, Ohio, in the United States. This building is special because of its unique design. It was built on an unusual piece of land.

What Makes the Crawford-Tilden Apartments Special?

The Crawford-Tilden Apartments are found on the east side of Cleveland. This building is an important historic site. It stands out because of its interesting shape. The building was designed to fit a unique plot of land.

Building a Unique Design

Construction on the Crawford-Tilden Apartments finished in 1908. The building was designed by Burt Corning. He was a famous architect from Ireland. Corning created many important buildings in Cleveland.

The outside of the building is made of brick. It also has parts made of stone and iron. You can see special details like pinnacles on the roof. Pinnacles are small, pointed towers. There are also bay windows along the walls. These windows stick out from the building.

The "V" Shape and Details

The building's shape is like the letter "V". The narrowest part of the "V" has special features. These include Ionic columns. Columns are tall, round supports. It also has a pediment. A pediment is a triangular shape above a door or window.

The building has twenty apartments inside. Each apartment was built with many small details. These apartments have stayed mostly the same. They have not changed much in over 100 years.

Why the Apartments are Historic

The city of Cleveland has named Crawford-Tilden a landmark. In 1978, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This is a list of important historic places in the United States.

The apartments earned this honor for a few reasons:

  • Its architecture is outstanding. It is one of the best works by Burt Corning. He was a leading architect in Cleveland.
  • It showed new architectural styles. These styles became popular during the Progressive Era.
  • It was one of the first garden apartment complexes in the area. Garden apartments are buildings with shared green spaces.

Bringing the Building Back to Life

Even though it was historic, the building started to decay. This happened near the end of the 1900s. But the apartments got a new chance. In 1997, the Ohio SHPO helped. SHPO stands for State Historic Preservation Office.

They gave an award to the city of Cleveland. The city's Department of Community Development also received an award. A special foundation helped too. These groups worked together to restore the building. They brought the Crawford-Tilden Apartments back to life.
