Fragaria viridis, often called the creamy strawberry or green strawberry, is a unique type of strawberry. It grows naturally in Europe and central Asia.
About the Green Strawberry
These strawberries have a wonderful taste. They don't have the strong smell of regular strawberries, but they offer a refreshing, slightly tart flavor. Sometimes, they even ripen without turning red!
How to Pick Them
When you pick a green strawberry, the small green leaves (called the calyx) usually stay attached to the fruit. You might also hear a small snapping sound as you pull it from the plant.
Its Genetic Story
Every strawberry plant has tiny packages of instructions inside its cells called chromosomes. All strawberries have a basic number of 7 chromosomes. Fragaria viridis is known as "diploid." This means it has two sets of these chromosomes, adding up to a total of 14 chromosomes. Scientists believe this strawberry species is very old, about 6.24 million years old!
