Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Creek Agency was a special office set up by the United States government. Its main job was to talk and make agreements with the Muscogee people, who were often called Creeks by others. These talks happened in Georgia and the Mississippi Territory.

What Was the Creek Agency?

The Creek Agency was created in 1796. It was located on the Flint River, in an area that is now Crawford County, Georgia. A man named Colonel Benjamin Hawkins started the agency. He was an Indian Agent, which meant he was a government official who worked with Native American tribes.

At the agency, Colonel Hawkins set up a trading post. This was a place where people could buy and sell goods. He also started a large farm, known as a plantation.

Benjamin Hawkins's Time

Colonel Benjamin Hawkins was known for being good at working with the Muscogee people. Many people, both then and now, thought he did a successful job. He worked at the Creek Agency until he passed away in 1816.

After Hawkins

After Benjamin Hawkins died, David B. Mitchell took over as the Indian Agent. He had previously been the Governor of Georgia. Mitchell served from 1817 to 1821. His time at the agency faced more challenges than Hawkins's.

An important agreement called the Treaty of the Creek Agency (1818) was signed at this location during Mitchell's leadership.
