Understanding the Treaty
Who Signed the Treaty?
The United States government was represented by David Brydie Mitchell. He was a former Governor of Georgia. At the time, he worked for President James Monroe. His job was to handle matters with the Creek nation. The Creek nation was a group of Native American people.
What Did the Treaty Change?
The treaty had clear terms. The Creek nation agreed to give up two large areas of their land. These lands were then given to the United States. In return, the United States promised to pay the Creeks $120,000. This money was not paid all at once. Instead, it was paid out over 11 years.
