Creighton Hale was an Irish-American actor who had a very long career! He acted in plays, movies, and even early television shows for over 50 years. His career started in the early 1900s and continued until the late 1950s. He was born Patrick Wills Fitzgerald on May 24, 1882, and passed away on August 9, 1965.
A Life in Acting
Creighton Hale was born in County Cork, Ireland. His parents were Maud V. Hale and Daniel Fitzgerald. He went to school in Dublin and London. Later, he attended Ardingly College in England. In 1910, he moved to America with a theater group.
He stayed in the U.S. and acted in "stock theater" plays. These were plays performed by a group of actors who stayed together. He performed in cities like Hartford and Indianapolis. At first, he was known as Pat Creighton Hale.
While acting in a play called Indian Summer on Broadway (a famous theater district in New York City), someone from the Pathe Film Company noticed him. He soon became known simply as Creighton Hale. No one really knows where the name "Creighton" came from!
Creighton Hale made his first movie appearance in The Exploits of Elaine in 1914. He had important supporting roles in many films. Some of these include Way Down East, Orphans of the Storm, and The Idol Dancer. Later, he became a star in movies like The Marriage Circle, Seven Footprints to Satan, and The Cat and the Canary. People really liked his acting in The Cat and the Canary. A magazine called Picture Show said he was "just natural."
He also appeared in several episodes of Hal Roach's famous Our Gang series. These were short comedy films about a group of neighborhood kids. He was in episodes like School's Out, Big Ears, and Free Wheeling. Later in his career, he had small, uncredited parts in big movies. These included Larceny, Inc., The Maltese Falcon, and Casablanca.
Family Life
Creighton Hale had two sons, Creighton Hale Jr. and Robert Lowe Hale. They were from his first marriage to Victoire Lowe. After his divorce, Creighton Hale married Kathleen Bering in Los Angeles in 1931.
Creighton Hale passed away on August 9, 1965, when he was 83 years old. He was buried in Duncans Mills, California.
