History of Crispy Crunch
How Crispy Crunch Was Invented
Harold Oswin started working at Neilson when he was just 14 years old. He was very good at making candy! By the late 1920s, he became a skilled candy maker. Harold always dreamed of creating a candy bar with peanut butter.
When Neilson announced a contest for new chocolate bar ideas, Harold saw his chance. He submitted his amazing concept for Crispy Crunch. He won the contest and received a prize of $5.00! That was a good amount of money back then.
From Log to Flat Bar
The very first Crispy Crunch bar was shaped like a log. But the people at Neilson decided to change it. They made the bar flat, which is the shape we know today. Harold Oswin, the brilliant inventor, lived a long life and passed away in the mid-1990s.
Becoming Super Popular
In 1988, a marketing director named Norm Williams wanted to make Crispy Crunch even more famous. He worked with an advertising expert, Martin Shewchuck. They came up with a very successful advertising campaign. The slogan was: "the only thing better than your Crispy Crunch is someone else's."
This fun campaign made Crispy Crunch incredibly popular! It went from being the 10th most popular chocolate bar to the number 1. Its sales grew by a huge 55%!
Crispy Crunch in the USA
For a short time in the 1990s, Crispy Crunch bars were sold in the United States. They were brought there by a company called Pro Set. However, Pro Set went out of business, and so Crispy Crunch was no longer sold in the United States. For a little while in the mid-1990s, there was also a version of Crispy Crunch with fewer calories.
New Owners and a New Recipe
The original makers, Neilson, sold their chocolate brands to Cadbury in 1996. Even after the sale, the packaging still showed the Neilson logo for a few years.
Since Cadbury started making Crispy Crunch, the recipe has changed a bit. It's now less salty and a little sweeter. It also has more of the crunchy, golden-colored candy coating around the center.
