The Story of Crispy Crunch
How it All Started
The Crispy Crunch bar was invented by Harold Oswin. He worked at a company called William Neilson. Harold started working there when he was just fourteen years old. He was a "candy roller" and later became a "candy maker."
In the late 1920s, Neilson held a contest to create a new chocolate bar. Harold had a great idea! He thought of a peanut butter center. This peanut butter was covered in a mix of sugar, molasses, and vanilla. Then, it was all dipped in chocolate.
Harold won the contest and received a $5.00 prize. That was a good amount of money back then! His original idea was for a log-shaped bar. But the people at William Neilson decided to make it flat. This is the shape we know today. Harold Oswin passed away in the mid-1990s.
Growing Popularity
In 1988, a new plan was made to make Crispy Crunch even more popular. A marketing director named Norm Williams led this effort. He worked with Martin Shewchuck from Leo Burnett Canada. They came up with a very successful advertising campaign.
The ads used the catchy phrase: "the only thing better than your Crispy Crunch is someone else's." This campaign was a huge hit! It helped Crispy Crunch jump from being the 10th most popular bar to the number 1 spot. Sales grew by a big 55%!
Changes Over Time
For a short time in the 1990s, Crispy Crunch was sold in the United States. A company called Pro Set, known for its collectible cards, distributed them. However, Pro Set went out of business. Because of this, Crispy Crunch was no longer sold in the U.S.
Around the mid-1990s, a version of Crispy Crunch with fewer calories was available. This was only for a limited time.
The original makers, Neilson, sold their chocolate brands to Cadbury in 1996. For a few years, the packaging still showed the Neilson logo. Since Cadbury started making the bar, the recipe has changed a bit. It is now less salty and a little sweeter. The crunchy center has more of its unique, golden-colored candy coating.
