The Story of Neilson Dairy
A Sweet Start
The company was started way back in 1893 by a man named William Neilson. At first, he just sold milk. Soon, he realized people loved treats, so he began making and selling cream and delicious ice cream.
The company officially became William Neilson Limited in 1907.
Growing and Changing
Over the years, many smaller companies in Canada were bought by bigger ones. In 1947, Neilson was sold to a large corporation called George Weston Limited.
Later, in 2008, George Weston Limited sold its dairy businesses. That's when Neilson became part of the Saputo family of brands, which owns it today.
What Does Neilson Make?
Neilson has made many different foods over the years. Here are some of the most well-known products, both past and present.
Dairy Products
- Milk, butter, and ice cream: These are the classic dairy products that Neilson is famous for.
- Instant puddings: Easy-to-make dessert mixes.
Famous Treats and Drinks
- Häagen-Dazs ice cream: For a while, Neilson had the license to make and sell this popular ice cream brand in Canada, from 1981 to 1990.
- Cadbury treats: In 1987, Neilson bought Cadbury's Canadian business. This meant they made famous chocolate bars. However, in 1996, they sold the chocolate business back to Cadbury.
- Flavoured milk: Even after selling the chocolate bar business, Neilson still has a license to make special chocolate milk drinks with flavours like Caramilk and Crispy Crunch.
- Chocolate bars: Neilson used to make many candy bars, including Jersey Milk, Mr. Big, and Crispy Crunch. Today, a company called Mondelez Canada makes them, but some, like Jersey Milk, still have the Neilson name on the package.
- Bite-size chocolates: Neilson also sells small chocolate snacks like Golden Buds and Slowpokes.
Where Neilson Products Are Made
