William Neilson started his dairy company in 1893. He was one of many independent dairy producers in Canada back then. At first, Neilson sold milk. Later, he started selling cream and delicious ice cream.

The company became "William Neilson Limited" in 1907. Over time, many smaller companies joined bigger ones. George Weston Limited bought William Neilson in 1947.

In 2008, Neilson Dairy became part of the Saputo family. Saputo is a very large dairy company.
