Parent Loblaw Companies

Real Canadian Superstore is a popular chain of large grocery stores in Canada. It is owned by a big Canadian company called Loblaw Companies. People often call it just Superstore for short. Sometimes, you might hear it called RCSS, which sounds like “Rick’s.”

These stores first opened in Western Canada in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Later, in the early 2000s, Superstore expanded into Ontario. This expansion helped Loblaw compete with other big stores like Walmart that were starting to sell more groceries.

Loblaw tried out different names for some stores in Ontario, like "Loblaw Superstore." However, the company decided to go back to using "Real Canadian Superstore" for all its stores. Even so, you might still see some older signs with different names.

Real Canadian Superstore locations are very big. They sell many different kinds of products. Most of the store is dedicated to groceries, like fresh fruits, vegetables, and meats. About one-third of the store sells other items. These include electronics, things for your home, and clothes.

Many of these non-food items are from Loblaw's own brands. Some popular brands you might see are President's Choice, Life at Home, No Name, and Joe Fresh.

Extra Services at Superstore

Superstore offers many helpful services for shoppers. You can find a PhotoLab to print pictures and a DrugStore for your pharmacy needs. Many stores also have a GoodLife Fitness gym. Some even have drive-through pharmacies and Mobil gas stations.

You might also find photo studios, community rooms, and medical clinics inside or near Superstore locations. These stores are designed to be easy to shop in. They also buy specific products for different areas to make sure customers get what they need.

How Superstore Started

The very first Real Canadian Superstore opened in March 1979. It was in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. At first, it was called SuperValu. Many other SuperValu stores opened across Western Canada. Over time, most of them became Superstore locations. The SuperValu name is still used in British Columbia.

In the early 2000s, Loblaw brought the Superstore name to Ontario. This was because other big stores, like Walmart, were adding large grocery sections. Loblaw wanted to offer its own large grocery stores to compete.

At first, Ontario stores sometimes had names like "Loblaws - The Real Canadian Superstore." But most stores shortened their names to avoid confusion. This also allowed each store chain to have its own weekly sales.

Superstore and Other Loblaw Stores

Loblaw Companies owns many different grocery store chains. Real Canadian Superstore is one of them.

In August 2024, Loblaw started changing the name of its Atlantic Superstore chain. It became Real Atlantic Superstore. This change made its name and logo more like Real Canadian Superstore. A similar change happened with Dominion stores in Newfoundland and Labrador. The goal was to help customers find good deals and save money by having similar stores across the country.

In Quebec, other Loblaw stores like Maxi and Co. and some larger Provigo stores offer a similar shopping experience. Also, some large Loblaws and Zehrs stores in Ontario are very similar to Superstores. They offer a wide range of food and other products.
