About Cristòfor Taltabull

Early Life and Studies

Cristòfor Taltabull was born in Barcelona, Spain. His family was educated and middle-class. He started studying music there, mostly learning to play the piano.

In 1907, his first musical work was published. After this, he moved to Munich. There, he studied music theory and aesthetics with Franz Wiedermeyer. He also went to Leipzig to study composition with Max Reger. Taltabull even dedicated one of his piano pieces, Sonatina per a piano (1910), to Reger.

Life in Paris

In 1911, Taltabull briefly returned to Barcelona. Soon after, he moved to Paris, France. He worked there as a composer, a pianist, and an arranger (someone who changes music for different instruments).

While in Paris, he continued his music studies. His teachers included André Gedalge, Charles Tournemire, and Charles Koechlin. In 1914, he married Lea Masson. He had to leave Paris during World War II when Germany invaded France.

Return to Barcelona and Legacy

When Taltabull came back to Barcelona, things were difficult. He did not find much success as a musician in Spain. To support himself, he gave private music lessons at his home. He passed away in Barcelona in 1964.

After his death, Taltabull's students praised him as a very talented teacher. Many important Catalan musicians from the late 20th century were his students. These include Xavier Benguerel, Joan Guinjoan, Josep Mestres Quadreny, Josep Soler, and Salvador Moreno Manzano.
