Cristóbal Valero (born in Alboraya in 1707 – died in December 1789) was a Spanish painter and a priest. He is known for his religious paintings and portraits.

Cristóbal Valero's Life Story

Cristóbal Valero first studied philosophy, which is about big ideas and how we think. But he also loved art and trained to be a painter with a teacher named Evaristo Muñoz. To learn even more, he traveled to Rome, Italy, where he studied with a famous artist named Sebastiano Conca.

After becoming a priest, Valero returned to Valencia, Spain. He helped start an important art school called the Academia de Bellas Artes de Santa Bárbara. In 1762, he received a special honor: he was named an "Academician of Merit" at the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando. This meant he was recognized as a very skilled artist.

Six years later, in 1768, he became the very first Director of painting at another important art school, the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Carlos de Valencia. This shows how respected he was as an artist and a teacher.

His Artworks

People who lived at the same time as Cristóbal Valero wrote about many of his paintings. These artworks were often found in churches and monasteries in Valencia. Sadly, many of these paintings are now lost or have not been found. Some might have been destroyed over time, or even painted over by other artists.

However, some of his works are still known today. He painted several portraits of bishops, which are kept at the Archbishop's Palace. He also created two paintings that show scenes from the famous Spanish book Don Quixote. These two paintings can be seen at the Museo del Prado, a famous art museum in Spain. For a while, people thought these Don Quixote paintings were by a different artist, but now they are known to be by Cristóbal Valero.
