Cristian Mungiu's Early Life and Education
Cristian Mungiu was born in a city called Iași in Romania. His sister, Alina Mungiu-Pippidi, is a well-known political expert. Cristian first studied English literature at the University of Iași. After finishing his studies, he worked as a teacher and a journalist for some years. Later, he decided to follow his passion for movies. He went to the Film University in Bucharest to learn how to direct films. After he graduated in 1998, Mungiu started making several short films.
Mungiu's First Feature Film: Occident
In 2002, Cristian Mungiu released his very first full-length movie, called Occident. This film was a big success with critics. It won awards at many different film festivals. It was even shown at a special event called the Directors' Fortnight during the 2002 Cannes Film Festival.
Winning the Palme d'Or with 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days
