Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Cristóbal de Virués (born around 1550, died around 1614) was a famous Spanish writer. He wrote plays and poems. He is known for his epic poem El Monserrate and his collection of tragedies.

Who Was Cristóbal de Virués?

Cristóbal de Virués was born in the city of Valencia, Spain, around the year 1550. When he was older, he joined the army. He even fought in a very important battle called the Battle of Lepanto. This battle took place at sea. After his time in the army, he became a captain. He then went back to his hometown of Valencia before 1586.

His Most Famous Works

Virués is most famous for his long poem called El Monserrate. It was published in 1587. This poem tells the story of how the famous monastery at Monserrate was founded. People really liked this poem when it first came out. Even the very famous writer Miguel de Cervantes praised it! The poem was so popular that it was printed again in 1601.

More About El Monserrate

Later, around 1602, Virués went back to Italy. There, he made a new version of his poem called El Monserrate segundo. Over time, these types of long, serious poems became less popular. Because of this, his work is not as well-known today.

His Plays and Poems

In 1609, Virués published a book called Obras trágicas y líricas. This title means "Tragic and Lyrical Works." This book included five plays, all of them tragedies. Some of their names were La Gran Semíramis, La Cruel Casandra, and Elisa Dido. A tragedy is a type of play where the main characters face sad or terrible events.

Virués's Place in History

Cristóbal de Virués was part of a group of playwrights who wrote before Lope de Vega became very famous. Lope de Vega changed how plays were written in Spain. Because of this, Virués's style of writing plays went out of fashion. Even so, he is still an interesting writer to study. His plays sometimes had very wild or over-the-top parts. These parts can make his best scenes a bit strange, but they also make his work unique.

The exact year of Virués's death is not known. However, historians believe he was still alive around 1614.
