Crocker County was a county in the U.S. state of Iowa that existed for only a short time. It was created in 1870 by the Iowa General Assembly, which is like the state's law-making body. This new county was formed from the northern part of Kossuth County.
The main town, or "county seat," for Crocker County was Greenwood, Iowa. However, Crocker County did not last long. In December 1871, the Iowa Supreme Court made an important decision. They said that the law creating Crocker County went against the state's constitution.
The constitution stated that any new county must be at least 432 square miles (112,000 ha) (square miles) in size. Crocker County was smaller than this required area. Because of this, the court ruled that Crocker County could not exist. Its twelve townships then became part of Kossuth County again.
Why Was Crocker County Created?
In the late 1800s, Iowa was still growing. Sometimes, people wanted to create new counties to make it easier for citizens to reach their local government. A county seat was often far away for some people in very large counties.
Attempts to Create a New County
Even after Crocker County was dissolved, people still wanted a new county in that area.
Larrabee County Proposal
On February 22, 1913, a new idea came up. Lawmakers tried again to create a county in the northern part of Kossuth County. This proposed new county would have been called Larrabee County. It was named after William Larrabee, who was a governor of Iowa.
However, this plan also failed. The people in the area voted on it, and they decided not to create Larrabee County. So, the area remained part of Kossuth County.
