Tennis Courts for Play
The club has four fantastic hard-surfaced courts. These courts are made with a special synthetic material over asphalt. They are all lit up, so you can play tennis even after the sun goes down! The courts have been rebuilt and resurfaced many times to keep them in great condition, most recently in 2011.
The Friendly Clubhouse
There's also a comfortable clubhouse at Cromarty Tennis Club. Inside, you'll find a lounge where you can relax and washrooms. There's also an outdoor deck where you can sit and watch all the exciting tennis matches happening on the courts.
The Exciting Cape Breton Open
The Cape Breton Open is a big tennis championship hosted by the Cromarty Tennis Club. This tournament first started way back in 1936! After a break during World War II, it continued in 1947 and has been held every year since.
The Cape Breton Open brings together some of the best tennis players from all over Nova Scotia. Between 50 and 75 players compete in different categories. These include singles and doubles matches for men and women, as well as special divisions for players over 35, 45, 55, and 65 years old.
A Look at Club History
The club started as the Sydney Lawn Tennis Club in 1893. Five gentlemen worked together to create it. They bought land near Reservoir Brook in Sydney, hoping to build five tennis courts and other fun areas.
By June 1902, two courts were ready for players to use every evening. The club had a formal opening on July 19, 1902, which many people attended. The first big tournament on the new grounds happened in August 1902.
In 1903, the club officially became the Sydney Tennis Association, Limited. The first clubhouse was built by 1905. Today, the club is owned by the Cape Breton Regional Municipality. It is run by the Cromarty Tennis Club Society, which started in 1980.
