Tennis Courts

The club has four hard surfaced courts. These courts are made with a special synthetic material over asphalt. All the courts have lights, so you can play even after the sun goes down! The courts were completely rebuilt in 1996 and have been resurfaced several times since then to keep them in top shape.

Clubhouse Fun

There's also a clubhouse where members can relax. It has a comfy lounge, washrooms, and an outdoor deck. From the deck, you can watch all the exciting tennis matches happening on the courts!

The Cape Breton Open Tournament

The Cape Breton Open is a big tennis championship hosted by the Cromarty Tennis Club. It's been held there many times, starting way back in 1936! After a break during World War II, the tournament continued and has been held every year since 1949.

This tournament brings together some of the best tennis players from all over Nova Scotia. Usually, between 50 and 75 players compete in different categories. These include singles and doubles matches for men and women, and even mixed doubles. There are also special divisions for older players, like those over 35, 45, 55, and 65. It's a really exciting event for tennis fans!

Club History

Cromarty Tennis 1908
The first Cromarty Clubhouse, around 1908

The story of the Cromarty Tennis Club began a long time ago. It was first started as the Sydney Lawn Tennis Club in 1893 by five gentlemen.

In 1902, the club decided to buy some land in Sydney to build their own tennis courts. They wanted enough space for five courts, a bowling green, and even handball courts. By June 1902, two courts were ready and being used by players every evening! The club officially opened its new tennis grounds on July 19, 1902.

A year later, in 1903, the club became known as the Sydney Tennis Association, Limited. That same year, they hosted the third annual Nova Scotia Lawn Tennis Association Tournament.

The very first clubhouse was built by 1905. Over the years, the ownership of the club's property changed a few times. In 1963, the land was transferred to the City of Sydney, which is now the Cape Breton Regional Municipality (CBRM). Since then, the club has been run by the Cromarty Tennis Club Society, which was officially formed in 1980.
