Cromwell Mortimer (born June 1702 – died 7 January 1752) was an important British doctor and a keen historian. He was also the second secretary of the Royal Society, a famous group of scientists, from 1730 to 1752. Being a Fellow of the Royal Society (FRS) meant he was a respected member of this scientific community.

Early Life and Education

Cromwell Mortimer was born in June 1702. He was the second son of John Mortimer, who lived at Topping Hall in Hatfield Peverel, Essex. His mother was Elizabeth Sanders.

He studied medicine and earned his M.D. degree (Doctor of Medicine) in 1724 from the University of Leyden in the Netherlands. This degree showed he was qualified to practice as a doctor.

Cromwell Mortimer got married and had one son, Hans Winthrop Mortimer. Hans later became a Member of Parliament, which means he was elected to help make laws for the country.

Medical Career and Royal Society

After finishing his studies, Mortimer started his medical practice in London. In 1725, he was allowed to join the College of Physicians, which was a big step for doctors at that time.

In 1728, he became a member of the Royal Society. This is a very old and respected group of scientists. Being a member meant he was recognized for his scientific interests and contributions. Some important people who supported his membership were Francis Clifton, Claudius Amyand (surgeon), and Hans Sloane.

As the second secretary of the Royal Society, Cromwell Mortimer helped manage the society's activities. This included organizing meetings, keeping records, and helping to share new scientific discoveries. He held this important role for many years, from 1730 until his death in 1752.
