Hatfield Peverel is a village in the heart of Essex, England. It's about 6 miles (10 km) northeast of Chelmsford, a larger city nearby. You can easily reach it by road or train. The area also includes the small communities of Nounsley and Mowden.
The name Hatfield means a 'heathery space in the forest'. Peverel comes from William Peverel, a Norman knight. He was given land here by William the Conqueror after the Norman invasion in 1066. The village sits on high ground near the River Ter. It is located between Boreham and Witham on the A12 road. In 2020, about 3,226 people lived in the main village area.
Hatfield Peverel is also home to the remains of a priory. This religious building was started by a Saxon woman named Ingelrica. She was the wife of Ranulph Peverel. The priory was later closed down by King Henry VIII.

Agnes Waterhouse: A Historical Figure
Hatfield Peverel was once home to Agnes Waterhouse. She was one of the first women in England to be tried and found guilty of witchcraft. This happened in 1566. She was known locally as Mother Waterhouse.
During her trial in Chelmsford, two other women were also accused: Elizabeth Francis and Joan Waterhouse, Agnes's daughter. Agnes was found guilty of using witchcraft to harm someone.
Elizabeth Francis said she had a "familiar," which was a cat named Satan. She claimed it helped her with various tasks. She later gave the cat to Agnes. Joan Waterhouse, Agnes's daughter, also interacted with the cat. It was claimed the cat could change shape, even into a toad. A child later accused Agnes Waterhouse of witchcraft, leading to her trial.
