Crooked Corner is a small place in New South Wales, Australia. It is located on the road between Bigga and Binda. Long ago, it used to be a small town. In 2016, only 61 people lived there.
Gold Rush Days
Gold was discovered in Crooked Corner a long time ago. In 1861, people found "alluvial gold." This is gold found in rivers or streams. Later, in 1871, "reef gold" was found. This type of gold is in rocks underground.
Mining for Gold
In the late 1880s, more gold was found. It was in a "reef" east of where the first gold was found. A company called the Palmer Gold and Silver Mining Company started working there. In 1888, they built a "battery." This machine crushed rocks to get the gold out.
Local School
Crooked Corner also had its own school for many years. It was called the Five Mile Tree public school. This school opened in 1892. It taught local children for over a century. The school finally closed its doors in 2009.
