The Crooked River is a river in Camden County, Georgia. It is about 26.8-mile-long (43.1 km). Most of the river is affected by ocean tides, and it flows into Cumberland Sound.

What is the Crooked River?

The Crooked River is an important waterway in southeastern Georgia. It is known for its winding path and its connection to the Atlantic Ocean through Cumberland Sound.

Where Does the Crooked River Flow?

The river begins in freshwater wetlands located northwest of Kingsland. From there, it flows eastward into areas of saltmarsh. Saltmarshes are coastal wetlands that are regularly flooded by ocean tides.

Along its journey, the Crooked River passes by several notable places:

  • Grover Island is located to the north of the main river channel.
  • To the south, you will find Crooked River State Park. This park is a popular spot for camping, fishing, and boating.
  • Also to the south is the Kings Bay Naval Submarine Base. This is an important base for the United States Navy.

The Crooked River eventually meets the Cumberland River. This meeting point is at the northern end of Cumberland Sound.

How Did the Crooked River Get Its Name?

The name "Crooked River" was given to this waterway because of its many twists and turns. A "meandering course" means that the river does not flow in a straight line, but instead curves and bends a lot.
