Crosby Hall is a historic house located in Little Crosby, a small area near Liverpool in Merseyside, England. It's a very old and important building, officially listed as a Grade II* building. This means it's considered a particularly important building of more than special interest.
The main part of the house you see today was built around 1785. It replaced an even older house from the Elizabethan era (the time of Queen Elizabeth I). Crosby Hall is almost square-shaped and has three floors. It's made from strong sandstone blocks and has a green slate roof.
History of Crosby Hall
Crosby Hall has been the family home of the Blundells for a very long time, stretching back to the Middle Ages. They were the main landowners, or lords of the manor, of Crosby. The Blundell family was known for their strong Catholic faith.
In 1590, Richard Blundell faced difficulties because of his beliefs. His son and daughter-in-law were also held for several years for being Catholic.
During the English Civil War, the Blundell family supported the King (they were Royalists). William Blundell, who was the head of the family at the time, was badly hurt during a battle at Lancaster Castle. He was put in prison, and his family's lands were taken away for ten years.
Later, in 1838-1839, another William Blundell held an important local position called the High Sheriff of Lancashire. Many members of the Blundell family have also been part of the Knights of Malta, a very old and respected group. Today, Mark Blundell is the head of the family. The Blundells are also connected to another Catholic family called the Welds.
