What is Crossroads Center?
Crossroads Center opened its doors in 1969. It is owned by a company called Namdar Realty Group. The mall is in a busy area with many other popular stores nearby. These include a movie theater, Best Buy, Super Target, Walmart, Barnes & Noble, and Bed Bath & Beyond. The mall is easy to reach because it's close to Interstate 380 and U.S. Highway 20.
Inside the Mall
The mall has a unique layout. The store called At Home is directly below where the Younkers store used to be. This is a bit unusual for a shopping mall.
Main Stores Over Time
The main stores in a mall are often called "anchor stores." They are usually big department stores that attract many shoppers. Crossroads Center has seen some changes with its anchor stores over the years.
- In 2015, the JCPenney store closed. At Home took its place in 2016.
- In 2018, the Sears store closed its doors.
- Later in 2018, Younkers also closed.
- In 2020, Gordmans announced it would be closing.
- Soon after, Dillard's also said its store at Crossroads Center would close.
After these changes, At Home became the only main anchor store left at the mall.
How Crossroads Center Began
The plans for Crossroads Center were first announced in 1967. At that time, two other malls with the same name were also planned in other cities. When Crossroads Center in Waterloo was built, it was the only enclosed shopping mall in all of Iowa.
