Croydon East is an area that elects one person to represent it in the House of Commons. This is part of the Parliament of the United Kingdom, which is where laws are made for the country. The person elected is called a Member of Parliament (MP). They are chosen using a system called "first past the post," which means the candidate with the most votes wins.

Croydon East used to be an election area for a short time, from 1950 to 1955. It will be used again for the next general election. This new Croydon East will mostly cover the area that is currently called Croydon Central, but without the very center of Croydon town.

History of Croydon East

Croydon East was first created for the 1950 general election. Before this, the area of County Borough of Croydon had two election areas. Croydon East helped make it three. It also included parts of the East Surrey area.

This new Croydon East area took parts from the older Croydon North and Croydon South areas. It shared borders with other areas like Croydon West and Beckenham.

All three Croydon election areas were changed again in the 1955 general election. Croydon South was brought back, and two new areas were made: Croydon North East and Croydon North West.

During its first time as an election area, Croydon East always elected Conservative MPs. There were three elections in this period: the 1950 general election, the 1951 general election, and a special election in 1954. This special election, called a by-election, happens when an MP leaves their job before the next general election.
