Cruz del Eje is a city in the province of Córdoba, Argentina. In 2010, about 30,000 people lived there. It is the main town of the department that shares its name. This department has a population of around 52,000.

A Look Back in Time

The land where Cruz del Eje now stands was first home to the Comechingón people. By the late 1600s, Spanish explorers and settlers arrived. The Comechingón people were forced to leave their homes or lost their land.

The first official owner of these lands was Francisco de Baigorri. This was recorded on September 22, 1735. This date is now celebrated as the day the city was founded.

How Cruz del Eje Grew

In 1878, a road was built connecting the settlement to Córdoba, the provincial capital. This made travel and trade much easier.

On May 8, 1890, Cruz del Eje officially became a municipality. At that time, about 4,000 people lived there. A train station also opened in the same year. Being a major train stop helped the city grow quickly.

Later, in the 1970s, the railway workshops were closed down. The Cruz del Eje Reservoir was finished in 1943. Governor Amadeo Sabattini started this important project. After the reservoir was built, Cruz del Eje became a popular place for tourists.

A Special President's Home

Before he became president, Arturo Illia was a doctor in Cruz del Eje. He worked there from 1928 until 1963. That year, he was elected President of Argentina.

In 2003, President Illia's former home in Cruz del Eje was turned into a museum. It helps people learn about his life and work.
