The gravel dragon or hidden dragon (scientific name: Cryptagama aurita) is a cool type of lizard. It's part of the agamid family, which includes many different kinds of lizards. You can find this special lizard in the dry, hot parts of north-eastern Western Australia and nearby areas of the Northern Territory. What makes the gravel dragon extra unique is that it's the only species in its entire group, called a genus.
Meet the Gravel Dragon
Adult gravel dragons are quite small and flat. They have short legs and a tail that's shorter than their body. Their tail also has a blunt, rounded tip.
Colors and Size
These lizards can be different shades of red. Some are a pale reddish-brown, while others are a brighter brick red. Their head and back often have a pale brownish-grey color. From the tip of their nose to the end of their tail, they usually grow to about 7.4 cm (2.9 in). That's about the length of a small smartphone!
Where They Live
Gravel dragons live in very dry areas. You can find them in places with lots of spinifex grass. They also live on "gibber plains." A gibber plain is a flat, stony desert area covered with small, loose rocks.
Amazing Camouflage
One of the most amazing things about the gravel dragon is how it hides. Over time, these lizards have changed to look just like the gibber stones around them. This special ability helps them blend in perfectly with their surroundings. It makes it very hard for predators to spot them!
