Cuevas is a small place in Harrison County, Mississippi, in the United States. It is known as an unincorporated community. This means it's a settled area that doesn't have its own local government like a city or town. Instead, it's governed by the county.
This community is located about 3.6 miles (5.8 km) northeast of Pass Christian. It's also about 4 miles (6.4 km) west-northwest of Long Beach. Cuevas is part of the larger Gulfport-Biloxi metropolitan area. This is a big region that includes several cities and towns.
Discovering Cuevas
Cuevas is a quiet community with a unique history. It's a place where people live and work. Even though it doesn't have its own city hall, it's still an important part of Harrison County.
How Cuevas Got Its Name
The story of Cuevas began in 1851. A man named Bertrand Labardens came to this area from France. He decided to make his home here. He claimed 165 acres of land.
Mr. Labardens was an important person in the early community. He opened a post office. He also started a grocery store. These were located at the corner of Menge Avenue and Red Creek Road.
Later, in 1893, Bertrand Labardens' son-in-law took over the store. His name was U. A. Cuevas. When Mr. Cuevas wanted to make the post office official, he faced a problem. He wanted to name it Pineville. However, there was already another town called Pineville in northern Mississippi.
So, U. A. Cuevas chose a different name for the post office. He decided to use his own last name, Cuevas. This is how the community got its name. Sometimes, people still use the name Pineville to refer to this area. But the official name became Cuevas because of the post office.
