Cully is a lively neighborhood located in the northeast part of Portland, Oregon. It's a place where many families live and enjoy community life.

Discovering the Cully Neighborhood

Cully is named after an early settler from England. His name was Thomas Cully (1810–1891). He was a stonemason, someone who works with stone. The main street that runs through the area, NE Cully Boulevard, is also named after him.

Where is Cully Located?

Cully is surrounded by several other neighborhoods in Portland. To the west, it borders Sunderland, Concordia, and Beaumont-Wilshire. To the north, you'll find the Portland International Airport. On the east side, it's next to Sumner, and to the south, it borders Rose City Park and Roseway.

Parks and Green Spaces in Cully

Even though Cully is a busy neighborhood, it has some great parks and green areas for everyone to enjoy. These include:

  • Sacajawea Park, which opened in 1985.
  • Rigler Community Garden, started in 2004, where people can grow their own plants.
  • Kʰunamokwst Park, a newer park that opened in 2015.
  • Whitaker Ponds Nature Park, a natural area established in 1998.

Despite having these parks, Cully has less parkland per person compared to other neighborhoods in Portland. This means fewer people live close to a park. However, the Thomas Cully Park Community Garden had its grand opening in 2012, adding more green space for residents.

A Look at Local History

In the southwest part of the Cully neighborhood, you'll find the Rose City Cemetery. It was founded in 1906. Inside the cemetery grounds, there's also a special section called the Japanese Cemetery. This part is cared for by the Japanese Ancestral Society of Portland.
