Cumberland County, New York was a special area of land that existed for a short time in the 1700s. It was first part of the Province of New York, which was a British colony before the United States became a country. Later, this land became part of what we now know as the state of Vermont.

What Was Cumberland County, New York?

Cumberland County was created in 1766. It was formed from a larger area called Albany County in the New York colony. This new county was located in the eastern part of New York.

Where Was It Located?

Cumberland County was situated south of another area called Gloucester County. It was also east of Charlotte County. You can see its location on old maps from the 1770s.

How Did It Become Part of Vermont?

Even though it was created by New York, Cumberland County eventually became part of Vermont. This happened in 1777. At that time, Vermont was not yet a state in the United States.

The Vermont Republic

In 1777, Vermont declared itself an independent country. It was called the Republic of Vermont. This meant it acted like its own nation, separate from both Great Britain and the new United States. Vermont did not officially join the United States until 1791.

What Happened to Cumberland County?

When Vermont became independent, Cumberland County was joined with Gloucester County. Together, they formed a new Cumberland County within the Republic of Vermont. For a while, this new Cumberland County and Bennington County were the only two counties in Vermont.

However, the Vermont Cumberland County did not last forever. It was later divided into several new counties within Vermont. A small part of it even became part of New Hampshire.
