Curious George Rides a Bike is a fun children's book written and illustrated by Margret Rey and H. A. Rey. It was published in 1952 by Houghton Mifflin. This book is the third story in the original Curious George series. It tells about George getting a new bicycle and his exciting adventures with an animal show.

George's New Bike Adventure

The Man With The Yellow Hat gives George a special gift: a brand new bicycle! George is super excited. He quickly learns to do cool tricks, like riding backward and even on just his back wheel.

Delivering Papers and Making Boats

While riding, George meets a paperboy. He decides to help deliver newspapers. George tosses papers to one side of the street. But then he sees a road he's curious about and rides off, forgetting the other papers.

He rides past a stream and sees two boys playing with toy boats. George loves boats! He gets off his bike and starts folding all the newspapers into little boats. He sets them free to float down the stream.

A Little Crash and a Big Idea

As George watches his paper boats, he's still riding his bike. He's not watching where he's going! Suddenly, he crashes into a rock. His front wheel gets badly damaged.

At first, George is sad and doesn't know what to do. He tries to ride normally, but can't. Then, he has a bright idea! He realizes he can still ride his bike on just the back wheel.

Joining the Animal Show

A New Job and a Warning

While riding on one wheel, George sees trucks for an animal show. The show director fixes his bike wheel. He's so impressed with George's riding that he asks George to join the show! George gets a special coat and cap, just like the director's assistant.

The director tells George not to cause any trouble. He gives a special warning: "Don't give anything to the ostrich!"

Ostrich Trouble

Of course, George gets curious about the ostrich. He offers his bugle to the big bird. The ostrich snatches it and gets it stuck in its throat! The workers rush to help the ostrich.

The director is very upset with George for not listening. He takes back George's coat and cap. George is fired from the show and has to sit on a bench.

George Saves the Day

George feels bad about his mistake. But then he notices something important. The ostrich accidentally pulls a string, and a cage door opens! A baby bear escapes!

Seeing this, George quickly grabs his bugle. He blows a loud warning sound. Then he jumps on his bike and chases after the bear! At first, the workers think George is misbehaving again. But then they see the empty bear cage.

Hero of the Show

Catching the Bear

The bear climbs up a tree. It's stuck on a branch, scared. Other workers are trying to catch it, but they can't reach. George rides up to the tree. He climbs up quickly.

George puts the baby bear into his empty newspaper sack. He carefully lowers the bear down to the workers. Everyone is so relieved!

A Hero's Welcome

When George climbs down, everyone praises him. He gets his coat and cap back. He's back in the show!

The whole city comes to see the animal show. Even the paperboy and The Man With The Yellow Hat are there. After the show, George is a big hero. He gets to keep his coat, cap, and bugle. The Man With The Yellow Hat takes George home for a well-deserved rest.
