George's Big Adventure: A Medal for a Monkey
This book tells the story of George, a little monkey who is always getting into trouble. But sometimes, his curiosity leads to amazing things!
The Story Begins with a Mess
George starts his day by making a big mess. He uses a fountain pen and ink, which spills everywhere. To clean it up, he tries to use a garden hose. But this only makes things worse! Soon, the room is completely flooded with water.
George quickly runs to a nearby farm to find help. He hopes to get a portable pump to remove the water. However, the farmer sees him and chases him away. George cleverly hides in a shirt hanging on a clothesline. Then, he jumps into a pickup truck. This truck is heading straight for a museum.
Monkey Business at the Museum
The truck takes George to a science museum. Inside, he accidentally causes another big mess. This time, it's in the dinosaur exhibit! The exhibit has huge, life-sized models of dinosaurs. There's a mother Stegosaurus and her baby.
George spots a palm tree model with nut-like fruits on it. He loves nuts and feels very hungry. A family comes into the exhibit. They see George touching the dinosaur. Because of his pose, they think he is just another model monkey!
After the family leaves, George is happy to be alone. He tries to pick the nuts from the tree. He pulls harder and harder, but the nuts don't come off. George doesn't know that the nuts, like everything else in the exhibit, are just models. He pulls so hard that the tree begins to sway. With a loud crash, the tree falls onto the mother dinosaur's head! The mother and baby dinosaurs tumble down, and the whole exhibit collapses. George falls down with them.
An Out-of-this-World Adventure
Museum guards quickly find George under the fallen dinosaurs. They are very surprised! They report the incident to Professor Wiseman, the museum owner. Professor Wiseman is very angry and surprised by the damage. He tells the guards to "lock the naughty monkey this instant and send him back to the zoo."
But then, the Man with the Yellow Hat arrives. He stops the guards with a letter from Mr. Miller, the mailman. The letter has exciting news! Professor Wiseman wants George to go up in a space ship and then bail out.
George agrees to this incredible mission. He is given a tiny space suit. At the important moment, everyone wonders if George will jump. But he does! The experiment is a huge success. George floats safely back to Earth using a parachute. For his bravery and success, George is awarded a special medal.
