Curtis Reginald Lewis facts for kids
Curtis Reginald Lewis (born August 29, 1918 – died May 23, 1969) was an American composer. He wrote many popular songs. A lot of his songs became famous "jazz standards." These are songs that many jazz musicians play.
Curtis was born in Fort Worth, Texas. He grew up in Chicago. In the 1940s, he moved to New York City. He made history by becoming one of the first Black composers. He was also one of the first Black lyricists to own a music publishing company on Broadway. This happened in the early 1950s.
He served in the United States Army during World War II. He was a Staff Sergeant. After the war, he was buried at the Long Island National Cemetery in Farmingdale, New York.
