Veronica "Randy" Crawford (born February 18, 1952) is an American singer. She is known for her amazing voice in jazz and R&B music. Randy has been very popular in Europe, even more so than in the United States.
She has had five songs reach the top 20 in the UK. Her song "One Day I'll Fly Away" was a huge hit in 1980, reaching number two. She also had six albums in the UK top 10. Even though she is American, she won the Best British Female Solo Artist award at the 1982 Brit Awards because of her popularity in the UK. Later in her career, she received two nominations for the prestigious Grammy Awards.

Early Life and Start in Music
Randy Crawford began her singing career performing in clubs. She sang in many places, from Cincinnati to Saint-Tropez. She became well-known in the mid-1970s in New York City. There, she sang with famous jazz musicians like George Benson and Cannonball Adderley.
In 1972, she signed with Columbia Records and released her first single. Cannonball Adderley even asked her to sing on his album Big Man: The Legend Of John Henry in 1975.
Rising to Fame
In 1979, Randy Crawford became widely known for her vocals on the song "Street Life" with the group The Crusaders. This song was a hit on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean. A special version of "Street Life" was used in the movies Sharky's Machine and Jackie Brown. It was also featured in TV commercials in the early 2000s.
Randy Crawford was named the 'Most Outstanding Performer' at the 1980 Tokyo Music Festival. She also sang the love theme, "People Alone," for the movie The Competition in 1980.
Later Career and Collaborations
After "Street Life," Randy Crawford released more successful solo songs. These included "One Day I'll Fly Away" (1980) and "You Might Need Somebody" (1981). These songs became classics in soul music. She also covered the popular song "Rainy Night in Georgia".
Her album Secret Combination (1981) was very popular in the UK. It stayed on the UK Albums Chart for sixty weeks! In 1986, her song "Almaz" also reached the UK Top Ten.
Randy Crawford has sung with many other talented artists. Some of these include Joe Sample, Quincy Jones, Al Jarreau, Rick Springfield, and Steve Hackett. In 2007, she recorded a live session with Joe Sample at the famous Abbey Road Studios.
In October 2018, Randy Crawford had planned a "Farewell South Africa" tour. However, she had to cancel it because she suffered a stroke. This tour was meant to be her final performance before retiring from music.
