Curundú is a lively area located right inside Panama City, the capital of Panama. It is known as a corregimiento, which is like a local district or neighborhood. In 2010, about 16,361 people lived there. Curundú is part of the Panamá District within the Panamá Province.

Curundú was once home to the Curundú Bowling Alley. This was the biggest bowling alley in the area known as the Panama Canal Zone. It also had the Pacific Arts Repertory Theater, often called "PRAT." This theater was a main place for community plays and shows. It was a popular spot along with the Theater Guild of Ancon.

Education in Curundú

During the time of the Panama Canal Zone, American military families lived in the area. The Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) ran schools for their children.

Schools for Military Families

  • Curundu Elementary School: This school taught younger students.
  • Curundu Middle School: This school was for older students.
  • Balboa High School: This was the high school for all American military dependents in Panama.

Curundu Junior High School

Curundu Junior High School was first part of the Canal Zone school system. Later, the Department of Defense Dependent Schools took it over. This group later became part of the DoDEA. The school taught 7th and 8th graders. These students came from the Canal Zone and were children of U.S. military members. The school had a special cafeteria shaped like a geodesic dome. Its school mascot was the Cougar.
