History of the Curwood Festival
The Curwood Festival started in June 1977. This was 100 years after James Oliver Curwood was born! James Oliver Curwood lived in Owosso. He was a very famous author and a conservationist, which means he cared a lot about protecting nature.
Mr. Curwood built the Curwood Castle as his special place to write. He later gave it as a gift to the city of Owosso. James Oliver Curwood wrote 33 exciting nature adventure books. More than 200 movies were made from his novels and short stories! Some of these movies even premiered, or showed for the first time, in Owosso. Most of his books were set in Canada. The festival began to celebrate all the great things Curwood did for his community.
In 2020, the festival had to be cancelled because of the COVID-19 pandemic. So, the 43rd festival was held in 2021 instead.
