Cuzcurrita de Río Tirón, often just called Cuzcurrita, is a small village in the autonomous community of La Rioja, Spain. It's a quiet place with a rich history, known for its old castle and charming churches. The village is located by the Tirón River, which gives it part of its name. It covers an area of about 19 square kilometers and is home to around 500 people.

History of Cuzcurrita

Cuzcurrita has a long and interesting past. The first time the village was mentioned in writing was in 1062. This was in an official document from King Sancho IV of Pamplona. In this document, the king gave some land in a nearby village to a noble named García Garcei. Back then, Cuzcurrita was called Coscorrita.

Early Mentions

In 1086, a story about a miracle by Santo Domingo de Silos mentioned a person from Cuzcurrita named Servando. This shows the village was already known. Later, at the end of the 11th century, official records from Miranda de Ebro also talked about Quosquorrita.

Becoming a Lordship

On November 15, 1367, King Enrique II of Castile gave the area of Cuzcurrita to Juan Martínez de Rojas. This meant Juan Martínez de Rojas became the Señor (Lord) of Cuzcurrita. He gained control over its lands and rights.

In the 16th century, during the time of King Philip II of Spain, Pedro Velasco became the ninth Lord of Cuzcurrita. He married Marta de Rojas y Osorio. Together, they created an entailed estate (called a mayorazgo). This was a special legal setup that kept family property together for future generations. You can still see their family crest carved above the castle door today.

The Castle's Story

The famous castle in Cuzcurrita was built by the Suárez de Figueroa family. This happened either at the end of the 14th century or the beginning of the 15th century. It was a strong building with thick walls and a tall tower.

In the 19th century, laws changed, and the old system of lords and entailed estates ended. Even so, the castle stayed with the Velasco-Rojas family for some years. After that, it was sold several times. In 1945, new owners bought the castle and carefully restored it to be a home.

A Walled Town

In the Middle Ages, Cuzcurrita was like a fortress. The town itself had strong walls around it. There was also the castle, which stood just outside these town walls. This made Cuzcurrita a very secure place.

Changing Provinces

Cuzcurrita used to be part of the province of Burgos. This was until 1833, when a new province called Logroño was created. Cuzcurrita then became part of this new province. A year later, the province was divided into smaller areas for legal purposes. Cuzcurrita was placed in the district of Haro.

Population of Cuzcurrita

The number of people living in Cuzcurrita has changed over time. On January 1, 2010, there were 554 people living in the town. This included 292 males and 262 females.

The Velasco Castle

This castle was built around the end of the 15th century by Pedro Suárez de Figueroa. It has strong walls, round towers at the corners, and a tall, elegant main tower (called a keep). This keep is special because it doesn't have any windows in its walls.

In the 16th century, during the reign of King Philip II of Spain, Pedro de Velasco, the ninth Lord of Cuzcurrita, married Marta de Rojas y Osorio. They started the entailed estate (mayorazgo) here. You can see their family crest carved above the entrance arch on the north wall. The castle is recognized as a "Site of Cultural Interest" and a "Monument" by the government since 1980.

The Roll

This is a stone column located on the el Bolo hill, just outside the town. In the past, it was a clear sign that Cuzcurrita was a señorío, meaning it was ruled by a lord. It showed the lord's power and authority over the area.
