The Honolulu cyanea (scientific name: Cyanea acuminata) is a very rare flowering plant. It is a type of shrub that grows only on the island of Oahu in Hawaii. This means it is endemic to Oahu. Sadly, there are fewer than 250 of these plants left in the world. Because it is so rare, the United States government lists it as an endangered species. In the Hawaiian language, this plant, like other Cyanea species, is called haha.

What is the Honolulu Cyanea?

The Honolulu cyanea is a plant that can grow up to 2 meters (about 6.5 feet) tall. It is part of a group of plants called Hawaiian lobelioids. These plants are special because many of them are found only in Hawaii.

Where Does It Live?

This rare shrub likes to grow in wet forests. You can find it on the slopes and ridges of the Koʻolau and Waiʻanae Mountains on Oahu. These mountain ranges provide the perfect damp environment for the plant to thrive.

Why is the Honolulu Cyanea Endangered?

The small number of Honolulu cyanea plants are divided into 18 different groups. Each of these groups faces many dangers that make it hard for the plant to survive.

Threats to Its Home

The places where the Honolulu cyanea lives are being harmed. Feral pigs and goats cause damage by eating the plants and trampling the ground. Rats can also harm the plants.

Invasive Plants

Another big problem comes from plants that are not native to Hawaii. These "exotic plants" grow very fast and take over the space and resources that the native Honolulu cyanea needs. Some examples of these harmful plants are Maui pamakani, kukui, and ti plant.

Other Dangers

Wildfires can also destroy the plant's habitat. Sometimes, people walking through the area, like military personnel, can accidentally trample the plants. Even with these challenges, scientists are hopeful. They believe there might be more Honolulu cyanea plants hidden in parts of the island that haven't been explored yet.
