About Cynda Williams
Cynda Williams was born Cindy Ann Williams in Chicago, Illinois. Her father, Charles, was a police officer. Her mother, Beverly, worked in a medical lab. Cynda grew up in the Pullman neighborhood of Chicago.
She also spent some of her childhood in Indiana. There, she sang in her grandfather's church. When she was a teenager, she moved with her mother to Muncie, Indiana. She went to Northside High School and finished in 1984.
After high school, Cynda went to Ball State University. She studied theater there. In 1987, she was crowned Ms. Ball State. She graduated from college in 1989.
Her Career in Acting and Music
In 1989, Cindy Ann Williams changed her first name to "Cynda." She did this to avoid confusion with another actress named Cindy Williams. That actress was famous from the TV show Laverne & Shirley.
Cynda Williams has acted in many films and TV shows. Her first big movie role was in Spike Lee's Mo' Better Blues in 1990. She once said that in the Midwest, casting directors told her she didn't look "black enough" or "white enough." But when she moved to New York, her unique look helped her get many different roles.
She also appeared in the movie One False Move (1992). She was also in the TV miniseries Tales of the City.
Cynda Williams also had a short career in music. In 1990, she sang the song "Harlem Blues" for the Mo' Better Blues soundtrack. The song became very popular. It reached No. 9 on the R&B music charts. Because of this success, she was going to make her own album with Sony Music. Even though she could sing many types of music, they wanted her to focus on jazz. However, the album was never released due to disagreements within Sony.
Some of her other notable films include Condition Red (1995), The Tie That Binds (1995), and Caught Up (1998). She has continued to act in films and television throughout the years.
