Cynthia Lillian Lui (born 17 February 1977) is an Australian former politician. She was a member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly, which is like the state parliament for Queensland, Australia. Cynthia Lui represented the area called Cook from 2017 to 2024.
She made history as the very first Torres Strait Islander person to be elected to any parliament in Australia. This was a big moment for the Torres Strait Islander community.
About Cynthia Lui
Cynthia Lui was born on 17 February 1977. Her family comes from Yam Island in the Torres Strait. The Torres Strait Islands are a group of islands north of Queensland, Australia.
Before becoming a politician, Cynthia worked as a community worker in Cairns. She helped people in her community and understood their needs. This experience was important for her journey into politics.
Her Time in Parliament
Cynthia Lui joined the Australian Labor Party. She worked hard to become their chosen candidate for the Cook area. In 2017, she was elected as the Member for Cook.
As a Member of Parliament (MP), her job was to represent the people living in the Cook electorate. She spoke for them in the Queensland Parliament. On 15 February 2018, she gave her first speech in the Parliament. This is called a "maiden speech." It's a chance for new members to talk about what matters to them and their community.
Cynthia Lui served in the Queensland Parliament until 2024. Her work helped open doors for other Indigenous Australians in politics.
