The Cyprus Women's Cup is a big international football tournament for women's national teams. It's like a special invitation-only competition. This exciting event has been held every year in Cyprus since 2008. Even though it takes place in Cyprus, the home team, the Cypriot women's team, has not yet played in the tournament.

The tournament usually happens in late February or early March. It's one of several women's football tournaments that take place around the same time each year. Other similar events include the Algarve Cup, the Arnold Clark Cup, and the SheBelieves Cup.

How the Cyprus Women's Cup Works

The Cyprus Women's Cup has two main parts: a group stage and a finals day. Here's how it all plays out:

Group Stage: Teams Compete in Groups

First, the twelve invited teams are split into three groups, with four teams in each group.

  • Group A and Group B usually have the higher-ranked teams. These are the teams that can actually win the championship.
  • Group C is made up of teams that are ranked a bit lower.

In this stage, every team in a group plays against every other team in their group once. This is called a round-robin tournament.

Finals Day: Deciding the Winners

After the group stage, there's one special "finals day." On this day, all twelve teams play one last game to figure out their final rank in the tournament. The games are set up like this:

  • The teams that finished last in their groups play for 11th and 9th place.
  • Teams that finished third in their groups play for 7th place.
  • Teams that finished second in their groups play for 5th place.
  • The best group winners and best second-place teams play for 3rd place.
  • The two best group winners play in the Final to decide who wins the Cyprus Women's Cup!
