The Story of Cémoi Chocolate
How It All Started
In 1814, Jules Pares opened one of the very first chocolate factories in France. This factory, located in Arles-sur-Tech, eventually grew up to become the Cémoi company we know today.
Growing Bigger and Making More
In 1962, a businessman named Georges Poirrier bought the company. He changed its name to Cantalou. As more people started buying things from supermarkets, the company began making lots of chocolate bars.
To grow even bigger, Cantalou started buying other chocolate companies. They bought Frankonia in 1977, Phoscao in 1979, and Aiguebelle in 1981. They also bought a company called Cémoi in 1981, and they liked that name so much, they decided to use it for the whole group!
In 2007, the Cémoi group created a new distribution company called Moreuil Distribution. They also bought a factory in Poland called Gryf, which specializes in roasting cocoa beans. In the same year, they took over another company called Jacquot.
A brand new chocolate factory opened in Perpignan in 2008. It was much bigger than the old one. By 2010, the original Perpignan factory became the company's main office. It now has special labs for new ideas and a cool shop that's also a museum!
Since 2012, the old Cémoi chocolate factory has been a shop where you can buy Cémoi products. You can even take tours to see where the chocolate used to be made and try different kinds of chocolate.
In 2015, Cémoi started a special program called "Transparence Cacao." This program helps them keep track of the entire chocolate-making process. They follow it all the way from the cocoa farmers to the chocolate bars you buy.
In 2017, the company bought an American company called Chris Candies. This company makes products for supermarkets and other big stores.
In July 2021, a Belgian company called Sweet Products bought the Cémoi Group. Together, these companies became even bigger. They now have about 5,000 employees and are a leader in making chocolates for different brands.
