D'Arcy Corrigan (born January 2, 1870 – died December 25, 1945) was an Irish lawyer who later became a film character actor in America. A character actor is someone who plays unusual or interesting characters, rather than the main hero or heroine.
Life and Career
D'Arcy Corrigan was born in County Cork, Ireland. Before becoming an actor, he worked as a private secretary for a member of Parliament. He also performed as a lead actor in a stock company, which is a group of actors who perform different plays together.
Corrigan had a unique look with his wrinkled, thin face. This helped him play many memorable, even if short, roles in movies. He appeared in over 50 films between 1925 and 1945.
Memorable Roles
Corrigan is remembered for several interesting parts:
- He played a strange morgue-keeper in the 1932 film Murders in the Rue Morgue.
- He was a blind man in the 1935 movie The Informer, directed by John Ford.
- One of his most famous roles was the spooky, silent Spirit of Christmas Future in the popular 1938 MGM film A Christmas Carol.
- He also had a small, uncredited role as Professor LaTouche in the movie Bringing Up Baby.
Later Years and Death
D'Arcy Corrigan mostly stopped acting in 1940. He had one very small role in the 1945 film Adventure. He passed away on Christmas Day in 1945, in Los Angeles, California. He was 75 years old.
