D'Atra Hicks (born Deitra Cherelle Hicks on December 27, 1967) is an American actress and singer. She is best known for her role as Jackie Simmons in Tyler Perry's 2002 stage play Madea's Family Reunion. Hicks also played Nurse Trudy in the 2006 play What's Done in the Dark and Niecy in the 2009 play Laugh to Keep from Crying.
Life and Career Highlights
D'Atra Hicks was born in Harlem, a neighborhood in New York City. She started singing in her grandfather's church choir when she was a child. As a teenager, D'Atra and her older sister Miriam formed a singing group called "The Hicks Sisters." They even made a demo recording of their music.
Their demo tape impressed the producers of a Broadway play called Mama I Want To Sing!. In 1985, D'Atra was offered the main role of Doris Winter in the play. She performed in this play from April 1986 until 1990. This play became a very successful off-Broadway musical.
While she was performing on Broadway, D'Atra Hicks signed a solo record deal with Capitol Records in 1989. She released her first album, D'Atra Hicks, on September 9, 1989. The album did well, appearing on the Top R&B Albums chart.
D'Atra Hicks later starred in several stage plays by Tyler Perry. These included Madea's Family Reunion and What's Done in the Dark.
She also appeared in the play Laugh to Keep from Crying, which was written and directed by Tyler Perry.
In 2018, D'Atra Hicks was asked by playwright JD Lawrence to join a new reality show. The show was called Your Husband is Cheating On Us and aired on Bravo. She appeared alongside other artists like Ginuwine.
Hicks also sang on Earnest Pugh's 2018 album, The UnSung Hits Vol. 1.

D'Atra Hicks is the older sister of actress and singer Taral Hicks. D'Atra Hicks has one child, a daughter named Diamond Grant. Diamond's father is actor Tony Grant.
Her TV Appearances
D'Atra Hicks appeared on the TV show Divorce Court with actor Loren Harper. They appeared on the show twice, once in 2010 and again in 2017. Their appearances were part of a comedy sketch for the TV series, not a real marriage.
