Elgin Baylor Lumpkin (born October 15, 1970), known by his stage name Ginuwine, is a famous American R&B singer. He became a star in the 1990s and 2000s with his smooth voice and catchy songs.

Ginuwine started his career in a music group called Swing Mob. He later went solo and signed with Epic Records. His first single, "Pony" (1996), was a huge hit. It climbed to number six on the Billboard Hot 100 music chart. This song was on his first album, Ginuwine...the Bachelor, which sold over two million copies.

His next albums were also very successful. 100% Ginuwine (1999) and The Life (2001) were both top-five albums. The Life included the song "Differences", which became his biggest hit. It reached number four on the Billboard Hot 100.

Throughout his career, Ginuwine has sold nearly 7 million albums in the United States. He also formed a group called TGT with fellow R&B singers Tyrese and Tank.

Early Life and Education

Elgin Baylor Lumpkin was born in Washington, D.C. on October 15, 1970. He was named after the famous NBA player Elgin Baylor.

He grew up in Maryland and went to Forestville High School, graduating in 1988. After high school, he attended Prince George's Community College. He earned an associate's degree to be a paralegal, a person who helps lawyers with their work.

Music Career

Starting in Music

Ginuwine's music journey began with a group called Swing Mob. This group was a team of talented artists, including future stars like Missy Elliott and Timbaland. Timbaland became Ginuwine's main music producer in the 1990s. They worked together to create a unique sound.

When Swing Mob broke up, the members continued to collaborate. Ginuwine, with Timbaland's help, created his first album, Ginuwine... the Bachelor. The album's first single, "Pony", became a massive success in 1996.

Rise to Stardom

In 1999, Ginuwine released his second album, 100% Ginuwine. It included the popular song "So Anxious". For his next album, The Life (2001), he worked with new producers like R. Kelly. This album gave him his highest-charting single, "Differences".

During this time, Ginuwine went through a difficult period after losing both of his parents. He expressed his feelings in the song "Two Reasons I Cry" from The Life album.

In 2002, he was featured on P. Diddy's hit song "I Need a Girl (Part II)". He also started his own record label called Bag Entertainment. His 2003 album, The Senior, had several hit songs, including "In Those Jeans".

Later Career and TGT

Ginuwine continued to release music. His fifth album, Back II da Basics, came out in 2005 and sold very well. In 2009, he released A Man's Thoughts, which featured artists like Brandy, Missy Elliott, and Timbaland. His seventh album, Elgin, was released in 2011.

In 2007, Ginuwine joined with singers Tyrese and Tank to form the R&B supergroup TGT. They released their first album, Three Kings, in 2013. The album was nominated for a Grammy Award.

Ginuwine was married to rapper Tonya M. Johnston, who is known as Solé. They met in 1999 and married in 2003. Together, they have two daughters, Story and Dream. Their divorce was finalized in 2015.

Ginuwine has a son from a previous relationship and four other children. In total, he is a father to seven children.
