Tyrese Darnell Gibson (born December 30, 1978) is an American R&B singer and actor. He is from Los Angeles, California. He became famous for his music and acting roles.
Tyrese signed with RCA Records in 1998. His first song, "Nobody Else", was released that year. His first album, Tyrese, was very popular and sold over a million copies. His song "Sweet Lady" was also a big hit.
His later albums, 2000 Watts (2001) and I Wanna Go There (2002), also sold many copies. The song "How You Gonna Act Like That" from I Wanna Go There became his highest-charting song. His fifth album, Open Invitation (2011), was nominated for a Grammy Award. His sixth album, Black Rose (2015), reached the top of the music charts.
Tyrese has sold more than 4 million songs and albums in the United States. He is also well-known for his acting. His first main role was in the movie Baby Boy (2001). He is widely recognized for playing Roman Pearce in the popular Fast & Furious movie series. He also played Robert Epps in the Transformers movies.

Early Life and First Steps
Tyrese Gibson grew up in Watts, Los Angeles, California. He lived with his mother and three older siblings.
His career started when his high school music teacher suggested he try out for a commercial. He appeared in a 1994 Coca-Cola advertisement, singing "Always Coca-Cola". This helped him become more famous. He also appeared in ads for brands like Guess and Tommy Hilfiger.
Tyrese's Music Journey
Starting His Music Career
Tyrese signed with RCA Records in early 1998. He then released his first song, "Nobody Else". This song quickly became popular, reaching number 36 on the Billboard chart.
On September 29, 1998, when he was 19, he released his first album, Tyrese. It debuted at number 17 on the Billboard charts. Tyrese also became a host for the music video show MTV Jams on MTV. His third song from the album, "Sweet Lady", was a huge hit. It reached number 9 on the R&B charts and earned him a Grammy nomination. His first album eventually sold over a million copies.
Second Album: 2000 Watts
On May 22, 2001, Tyrese released his second album, 2000 Watts. The first song from this album was "I Like Them Girls". It reached number 15 on the R&B/Hip-Hop charts. The album sold over 500,000 copies. Another song from the album, "Just a Baby Boy", was featured in his first major movie, Baby Boy.
Third Album: I Wanna Go There
After RCA Records closed, Tyrese signed with J Records. He released his third album, I Wanna Go There, on December 10, 2002. The first song from this album, "How You Gonna Act Like That", was very successful. It reached number 7 on the R&B/Hip-Hop charts.
Alter Ego and a Break
On December 12, 2006, Tyrese released his fourth album, Alter Ego. This was his first double album. On this album, he also introduced his rapping style under the name Black Ty. In 2007, Tyrese, along with singers Ginuwine and Tank, formed a music group called TGT.
Returning to Music with Open Invitation
After focusing on his acting career and family, Tyrese decided to return to music. In 2011, he signed with EMI and announced a new album called Open Invitation. The first song, "Stay", was released on August 16, 2011. The music video for "Stay" featured his friend and Baby Boy co-star Taraji P. Henson. The song reached number 11 on the R&B/Hip-Hop charts.
Open Invitation was released on November 1, 2011. It sold well and was nominated for Best R&B Album at the 2013 Grammy Awards.
TGT and Black Rose
In early 2013, Tyrese, Ginuwine, and Tank released their first group album as TGT. In 2014, Tyrese released his album Black Rose. On July 10, 2015, Black Rose debuted at number 1 on the Billboard 200 chart. This was Tyrese's first album to reach the top spot.
New Music: Beautiful Pain
In October 2017, Tyrese announced a new music project. He later said it would be an R&B album called Beautiful Pain. A song called "Don't Think You Ever Loved" was released in February 2023. Tyrese also appeared on season five of The Masked Singer as the character "Robopine".
Tyrese's Acting Roles

Tyrese Gibson has starred in two very successful movie series: Fast & Furious and Transformers. His first movie role was in John Singleton's Baby Boy in 2001.
Fast & Furious Movies
Tyrese plays Roman Pearce in the Fast & Furious film series. He first appeared as Roman Pearce in 2 Fast 2 Furious (2003) with his friend Paul Walker. He has continued to play Roman in many other Fast & Furious movies, including Fast Five (2011), Furious 7 (2015), F9 (2021), and Fast X (2023).
Transformers Movies
Tyrese plays Sergeant Robert Epps in the Transformers film series. The first Transformers movie in 2007 made nearly $710 million worldwide. It was directed by Michael Bay and produced by Steven Spielberg. Tyrese played Epps again in Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen (2009) and Transformers: Dark of the Moon (2011).
Other Movies
In 2005, Tyrese worked with director John Singleton again in the action-crime movie Four Brothers. He also starred in the action-drama Waist Deep. In 2008, he appeared with Jason Statham in Death Race. In 2019, Tyrese joined the cast of the superhero movie Morbius.
Tyrese as an Author
In 2009, Tyrese helped create a three-issue comic book series called Tyrese Gibson's MAYHEM!. He was inspired after visiting Comic Con.
On May 8, 2012, Tyrese released his first book, How to Get Out of Your Own Way. This book became a New York Times bestseller. On February 5, 2013, he co-wrote his second book, Manology: Secrets of Your Man's Mind Revealed, with his friend Rev. Run. This book also became a New York Times bestseller.
Personal Life
Tyrese Gibson was married to Norma Mitchell from 2007 to 2009. They have a daughter together, born in 2007.
In January 2017, Tyrese bought a home in Atlanta, Georgia. He married Samantha Lee on February 14, 2017. Their daughter was born on October 1, 2018. Tyrese and Samantha Lee announced their divorce in December 2020. Their divorce was finalized in 2020.
Tyrese is a Christian.
