Chingy's Early Life and Start in Music
Chingy grew up in a neighborhood in St. Louis called Walnut Park. He often called it the "Bad Blocks."
He began writing rap lyrics when he was just 9 years old. By age 10, he was already recording his own raps. At first, he was known as H Thugz. He was part of a St. Louis group called Without Warning. They had a local hit song together called "What's Poppin Off." Later, H Thugz changed his stage name to Chingy. This new name is a slang term for money.
Chingy went to McCluer North High School in Florissant, Missouri. His friends there knew him as "Howie." He still prefers close friends and family to call him by that name.
