Cam'ron Giles (born February 4, 1976), known simply as Cam'ron, is an American rapper. He started his music career in the early 1990s as Killa Cam.

He signed with Lance "Un" Rivera's Untertainment label, which was part of Epic Records. With them, he released his first two albums, Confessions of Fire (1998) and S.D.E. (2000). Confessions of Fire sold well and earned a gold award.

After leaving Epic, Cam'ron joined Roc-A-Fella Records in 2001. His third album, Come Home with Me (2002), was a big hit. It sold enough copies to get a platinum award. This album featured popular songs like "Oh Boy" and "Hey Ma". Both songs featured Juelz Santana and reached the top of the Billboard Hot 100 charts. His fourth album, Purple Haze (2004), was also very successful and earned a gold award.

Later, Cam'ron left Roc-A-Fella and joined Asylum Records in 2005. In 2006, he released his fifth album, Killa Season. He also starred in and directed a movie with the same name. After taking a break to care for his mother, he returned to music in 2009. His sixth album, Crime Pays, reached number three on the Billboard 200 chart. His seventh album, Purple Haze 2, came out in 2019.

Besides his solo music, Cam'ron was part of the group Children of the Corn in 1993. He also formed the hip hop group The Diplomats (also called Dipset) with his friends Jim Jones and Freekey Zeekey. Later, he was half of the duo U.N. with Vado. Cam'ron has also acted in movies like Paper Soldiers and Paid in Full.

Biography

Early Life and Music Beginnings (1976–1997)

Cam'ron Giles grew up in East Harlem, a neighborhood in Upper Manhattan, New York City. His mother, Fredericka Giles, raised him. He went to the Manhattan Center for Science and Mathematics high school. There, he met his friends Mase and Jim Jones.

Cam'ron was a talented basketball player in school. However, he chose to focus on music instead of basketball scholarships. He briefly attended college in Texas but soon returned to Harlem. A childhood friend, Mase, introduced Cam'ron to famous rapper The Notorious B.I.G.. Biggie then introduced him to Lance Rivera, who signed Cam'ron to his record label, Untertainment.

In the mid-1990s, Cam'ron started rapping with Big L, Mase, and his cousin Bloodshed. They formed a group called Children of the Corn. After a sad event in 1997, the group broke up. The remaining members then started their own solo music careers.

First Albums and Big Hits (1998–2002)

Cam'ron's first album, Confessions of Fire, came out in July 1998. It included popular songs like "3-5-7" and "Horse and Carriage" with Mase. The album sold very well and earned a gold award. It also reached the top 10 on both pop and R&B music charts.

In 2000, Cam'ron released his second album, S.D.E. (Sports ... & Entertainment). This album featured other artists like Destiny's Child and Juelz Santana. It reached number 2 on the R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart.

Cam'ron decided to leave Sony/Epic Records. In 2001, he signed with Roc-A-Fella Records. This label was run by his childhood friend Damon Dash, along with Jay-Z. Cam'ron's third album, Come Home with Me, was released in 2002. It featured artists like Jay-Z and had production from Kanye West. The album included the hit songs "Oh Boy" and "Hey Ma". Both songs featured Juelz Santana and helped the album earn a platinum award. This success also helped Cam'ron's group, The Diplomats, sign with Roc-A-Fella.

In 2002, Cam'ron also started acting. He appeared in the movie Paid in Full, produced by Damon Dash. He played one of the main characters in the film. Later, in 2006, he directed and wrote his own movie, Killa Season, which was released on DVD.

New Music and Collaborations (2010–Present)

From late 2009 to early 2010, Cam'ron released several mixtapes called Boss of All Boses. These mixtapes featured his new artist Vado. Cam'ron and Vado also formed a group called U.N. and released an album together, Heat in Here Vol. 1. Their song "Speaking Tongues" was quite popular.

In 2011, Cam'ron and Vado released another album called Gunz n' Butta. Later, Vado signed with a different music group. After some time, Cam'ron and Jim Jones decided to work together again. They planned a third album for their group, The Diplomats, with Juelz Santana and Freekey Zeekey.

Cam'ron also worked with other artists. In 2012, he was featured on Wiz Khalifa's album O.N.I.F.C. and Nicki Minaj's album Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded.

In 2013, Cam'ron talked about his seventh album, Killa Season 2. He said it would feature artists like T.I., Nicki Minaj, and Wiz Khalifa. He also released a mixtape called Ghetto Heaven Vol 1.

In 2014, Cam'ron teamed up with DJ A-Trak for a music project called Federal Reserve. They released a song called "Dipsh*ts". Cam'ron also launched a "Cape line" with fashion designer Mark McNairy during New York Fashion Week. He even released a special "Ebola mask" for fashion. Cam'ron also has his own clothing line called "Dipset USA".

Throughout 2014, Cam'ron released a series of EPs (smaller albums) called 1st of the Month. He released one each month from July to December. In December 2014, he announced that his next album would be Purple Haze 2, a sequel to his popular 2004 album. He also said this would be his final album.

In 2015, DJ Funkmaster Flex announced that The Diplomats (Cam'ron, Jim Jones, Juelz Santana, and Freekey Zeekey) were working on a new mixtape together. In 2016, Cam'ron announced an album called Killa Pink and promoted his special Reebok shoes.

Fashion Designing

Cam'ron has also worked in fashion. In 2014, he showed off his "Cape line" with designer Mark McNairy at New York Fashion Week. He also created a unique "Ebola mask" that he said was both safe and stylish. Cam'ron has his own clothing brand called "Dipset USA", named after his former record label, Diplomat Records.

Personal Life

On October 23, 2005, Cam'ron was involved in an incident in Washington, D.C. While stopped at a traffic light, someone tried to take his car. Cam'ron resisted, and he was shot. He was able to drive himself away and was taken to the hospital by a fan. He later said he did not know who shot him.
